Mammography is the best tool we have to help find breast cancer. Mammograms should be part of every woman's health care plan.

Our breast imaging services use the latest technology, such as breast tomosynthesis which is also called 3D mammography. 3D mammography helps us see breast tissue one layer at a time. This makes it easier to spot problems.

We offer Saturday appointments to make it easier for you to come in. We also work with The Polyclinic's Breast Surgery team made up of experts in surgical and non-surgical care for breast problems.

Types of mammography

A screening is used to find a problem even if you don't have signs or symptoms. A screening mammogram can help find breast cancer at early stages.

Usually screening mammograms are done by a skilled female staff member registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

A diagnostic mammogram helps doctors solve problems. Usually a diagnostic mammogram is done by a technologist who works with a breast radiologist to find the right breast images.

A diagnostic mammogram can also help us find out if a breast ultrasound is needed. A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to form pictures of the inside of the breast.

Contact your doctor before you schedule your mammogram.

You should let your doctor know if you could be pregnant or if you're breastfeeding. You should also let your doctor know if you have any breast problems, such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge (pus or liquid coming out).

Before your mammogram, get copies of the results from mammogram exams you may have had before. It's best to do this ahead of time so those images are already in our system the day of your exam.

Don't use deodorants, lotions or any powder on your skin. Be sure to wear a two-piece outfit to your exam appointment.

OR
A specialized radiologist will review your exam and send a report to your doctor. Your doctor will talk to you about your exam results. After you talk to your doctor, the results are also available on MyChart.

When you'll get results will depend on what type of mammogram you're having.
